Clean Energy Rally
TOMORROW, Thursday Nov 12
12:30pm–1:00pm
~outside the Coal Plant~
Fee Ln and 11th St (near Foster)
Professor Maurice Manning (English Department) and Senior Terrence Ellison (SPEA) will talk about the importance of transitioning IU beyond coal to 100% clean, renewable energy!!
Thank you to everyone that came to Coal Free IU’s sneak preview of Coal Country! Here is a video of our guest speaker, Jason Wilber, who produced the Coal Country Companion CD. CHECK IT OUT!
If you missed the event, Coal Country will also be shown this Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 at the Buskirk Chumley Theater downtown Bloomington.
Coal Country is a new documentary exploring modern coal mining and the controversy over such practices as strip mining and Mountain Top Removal. Set to officially premier the 14th on Discovery Channel, this focuses on coal’s cradle-to-grave portrait, and the environmental and community impact the mere extraction of coal causes, before the latter issues of global warming and harmful emissions emerge.
Jason Wilber, a local musician who worked on the companion CD to Coal Country, will speak before the film.

The Visual Arts Events Committee chalked a mural on Ballantine Hall last week exposing IU’s connection with dirty coal energy. Reading “Coal = Death” and “Your campus is powered by Coal”, the mural paints the connection between coal pollution being emitted at the Central Heating Plant on 11th & Fee Lane and the negative impacts on our environment and public health. Denouncing the existence of coal-lobby invented “clean coal” (FMI: Check out Clean Coal–The Dirty Lie), the mural calls for IU students to take a stand. Right now coal may power this campus, but it doesn’t have to.
Sign our petition or contact us (coalfreeiu@gmail.com) to learn how to get IU beyond coal!

Thanks again to everyone who made it out to the Green Potluck! We had a really great time eating locally donated foods, carving pumpkins and taking some photo and video petitions. The IDS came out to cover our event and took some really great photos, check them out here or below:
Join us today (Wednesday) for our green potluck!!! We will have tons of food and pumpkin carving so come on over to the peoples Park on Kirkwood anytime from 5pm to 7pm! See you soon!
Tomorrow as part of a national day of action people from all over the world representing over 177 countries will come together to take action on climate change. Scientists say that 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe upper limit for humanity. We are currently over 387.
Coal is the #1 contributor to CO2 emissions nationwide, accounting for over 30% of global warming pollution in the United States. That means a lot for us living in Bloomington. Indiana’s carbon dioxide emission per capita is number one in the country, with a significant portion of that coming from coal-fired plants including IU’s Central Heating Plant on Fee Lane.
Bloomington residents and IU students are coming together this Saturday to take action and call for change. Join Coal Free IU and the Bloomington 350 Coalition for a day full of events:
Mayor Mark Kruzan will kick off the event at 12:00pm at the Bloomington Community’s Farmers Market
Then join the parade to Third Street Park at 12:30pm
From 1pm – 5pm join us for speakers, music, and artistic demonstrations in Third Street Park
Make sure to come find the Coal Free IU Campaign and take a photo petition to call for transitioning IU beyond coal to 100% clean, renewable energy! We will be wearing our yellow Beyond Coal shirts and buttons!
Also, check out the coverage of the event in the IDS!
We will have a short skit followed by collecting some signatures on our petition so be sure to catch us before we move locations (Sample Gates 12:30pm–12:45pm)! Hope to see you there!
This event is done in coalition with Bloomington 350. October 24th is the International Climate Action Day with events planned in over 100 countries and people all over the Earth taking action to demand leaders take bold steps to address climate change. 350 ppm is the safe upper limit of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere. To learn more or connect with the international movement, go to http://www.350.org.
On Tuesday, Sept 29 we held a National Day of Action Photo Petition drive outside of Ballantine Hall from 10am–3pm. Thanks to everyone who came out! In a few hours we were able to collect over 300 photograph petitions for our campaign. This was an action that was part of the National Day of Action with events happening across the country. On Tuesday over 2,400 photo petitions were taken and will be sent to the EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and the White House.
