Join us tomorrow: Bloomington 350

October 23, 2009

Tomorrow as part of a national day of action people from all over the world representing over 177 countries will come together to take action on climate change. Scientists say that 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe upper limit for humanity. We are currently over 387.

Coal is the #1  contributor to CO2 emissions nationwide, accounting for over 30% of global warming pollution in the United States. That means a lot for us living in Bloomington. Indiana’s carbon dioxide emission per capita is number one in the country, with a significant portion of that coming from coal-fired plants including IU’s Central Heating Plant on Fee Lane.

Bloomington residents and IU students are coming together this Saturday to take action and call for change. Join Coal Free IU and the Bloomington 350 Coalition for a day full of events:

  • Mayor Mark Kruzan will kick off the event at 12:00pm at the Bloomington Community’s Farmers Market
  • Then join the parade to Third Street Park at 12:30pm
  • From 1pm – 5pm join us for speakers, music, and artistic demonstrations in Third Street Park

Make sure to come find the Coal Free IU Campaign and take a photo petition to call for transitioning IU beyond coal to 100% clean, renewable energy! We will be wearing our yellow Beyond Coal shirts and buttons!

Also, check out the coverage of the event in the IDS!
